Overview

At Bridge Street, Music plays an important role in supporting pupils’ emotional wellbeing, communication and confidence. We follow the Get Set 4 Music programme, which provides a clear and progressive curriculum from EYFS to Key Stage 2. Lessons are practical, creative and accessible, allowing every child to experience success, regardless of their starting point or additional needs.

Intent

Our intent is to provide a high-quality music education that inspires pupils and helps them develop a lifelong appreciation of music. We want children to feel confident using their voices, exploring instruments and creating their own music. Through performing, listening, appraising and composing, pupils experience music from a wide range of cultures, styles and traditions. Music at Bridge Street supports self-expression, emotional regulation and communication, helping pupils with SEMH needs to express themselves safely and positively. We aim to develop musical vocabulary, creativity and technical skills while nurturing pupils’ confidence and enjoyment.

Implementation

Music is taught using the Get Set 4 Music scheme, offering a structured and carefully sequenced progression of skills. Lessons are highly practical, incorporating singing, body percussion, rhythm games, instrumental work, improvisation and composition. Activities are broken down into manageable steps and adapted to meet pupils’ EHCP outcomes, sensory needs and emotional readiness. Listening activities and performance opportunities help pupils build confidence and celebrate success. Cross-curricular links, especially with literacy, PSHE and emotional development, allow pupils to see music’s relevance across learning and in their daily lives.

Impact

Music at Bridge Street has a positive impact on pupils’ confidence, communication and emotional expression. Children develop the ability to use musical terminology, perform with enthusiasm and listen with greater understanding. Pupils experience music from different cultures and time periods, broadening their awareness of the world and encouraging respect for diversity. The impact is visible in class performances, informal sharing opportunities and in pupils’ enjoyment and engagement during lessons. By the time they leave Bridge Street, pupils have developed strong foundations in musical skills and a genuine enjoyment of music that supports their wellbeing and future learning.
