Overview

Our Discovery curriculum is taught during the Autumn term with the primary focus being History.

Intent

We believe that teaching and learning in History should inspire pupils to be curious and creative thinkers, who develop the confidence to think critically, ask questions and be able to explain and analyse. History will support children to appreciate the complexity of people’s lives, the diversity of societies and the relationship between different groups. Studying History allows pupils to appreciate the many reasons why people may behave in the way they do, supporting children to develop empathy for others while providing an opportunity to learn from mankind’s past mistakes.

Implementation

The Discovery curriculum will develop pupils skill, knowledge and understanding in the following:

Historical Enquiry – Understand the methods of historical enquiry, including how evidence and different sources are used to make historical claims and why and how contrasting arguments of the past have been constructed.

Chronology – Place their growing knowledge into different contexts and understand connections between local, regional, national and international history within short and long-term timescales.

Historical Knowledge – Know and understand how Britain and the wider world have been shaped and influenced by civilisations, events, societies and individual people from the past.

Historical Interpretation – Understand historical concepts such as continuity, consequence, reform and change and use them to make connections, draw contrasts and communicate how history has been interpreted by others, leading to their own evidence-based interpretations.

Impact

Pupils work evidences a broad and balanced history curriculum and demonstrates the pupil’s acquisition of identified key knowledge. Pupil voice is taken at the end of Autumn Term which is used by leaders to further improve our pupil’s experiences.
