Intent

Our English curriculum aims to develop confident communicators, enthusiastic readers and successful writers. Through high-quality texts, Talk for Writing and a focus on vocabulary development, pupils learn to express themselves clearly, read with understanding and write for a range of purposes and audiences. Learning is organised into developmental stages to ensure all pupils can access an ambitious curriculum that meets their individual needs.

Implementation

English is taught through a structured progression of skills from Stage N to Stage 6. We use the Talk for Writing approach, which supports pupils to learn through imitation, innovation and independent application. High-quality texts form the basis of learning, alongside regular opportunities for oral storytelling, discussion, reading and writing. Vocabulary, grammar, spelling and handwriting are taught explicitly and revisited regularly to support long-term learning.

Impact

Pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to communicate effectively, read with understanding and write independently. They demonstrate increasing fluency, accuracy and creativity in their writing and are able to apply their skills across the curriculum. By the time they leave Bridge Street, pupils are equipped with the literacy skills needed for the next stage of their education and beyond.
