Overview

At Bridge Street, Design and Technology is an important part of our full National Curriculum offer. We use the Twinkl Plan It D&T scheme to provide a structured and progressive sequence of lessons, adapted to meet the needs of our pupils. D&T gives our pupils meaningful opportunities to solve real problems, work practically and experience success through hands-on learning.

Intent

Our intention is to inspire pupils through practical, creative experiences that help them design and make purposeful products. We aim to teach pupils how to identify real problems, explore and evaluate existing products, and then design and build their own solutions. The iterative design process, designing, making, evaluating and improving, is central to our approach and helps pupils develop resilience, reflection and problem-solving skills. Pupils also learn about key individuals, inventions and events in D&T, developing an understanding of how design and technology shape everyday life.

Implementation

D&T lessons follow a clear structure that builds skills progressively, while remaining flexible enough to meet pupils’ SEMH and sensory needs. Staff break tasks into supportive steps, scaffold practical work and ensure pupils can revisit and practise skills at a pace that suits them. Key vocabulary is introduced clearly, revisited and displayed to help build understanding and confidence. Adult guidance, modelling and high-quality resources support staff so that all pupils can access learning meaningfully. Lessons are adapted to incorporate regulation opportunities, personalised targets from EHCPs and a strong focus on teamwork, independence and safe exploration.

Impact

Design and Technology has a positive impact on pupils’ confidence, enjoyment and practical skills. Pupils learn to use technical vocabulary, talk about their design choices and evaluate their own work. They become more resilient, reflective and willing to try new ideas. Across school, D&T contributes to a consistent learning environment where creativity, problem-solving and pride in practical outcomes are celebrated. Progress is seen through pupil voice, practical outcomes, assessment opportunities and increasing independence over time. Above all, pupils enjoy D&T and gain valuable skills that support their wider development now and in the future.
